Harley Ingleby Mid 6 Twin Review: My New Favourite Twin Fin Mid Length!

Discover why the Thunderbolt Harley Ingleby Mid6 Twin is a must-have for your quiver! This high-performance mid-length might just blow you away!

Looking to add a high-performance mid-length to your quiver? The Thunderbolt Harley Ingleby Mid6 Twin might just be your next go-to board. I recently had the chance to put this board through its paces on a surf trip to the Maldives, and let’s just say — I was not expecting it to blow me away the way it did.

Here’s the full lowdown on what makes this board so good, who it’s best for, and why it’s now a staple in my quiver.

Who Is the Mid6 Twin For?

The Mid 6 Twin is the follow-up to the original Mid 6 — one of the first high-performance mid-lengths that really gained traction globally. Like its predecessor, the Mid 6 Twin is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers.

If you’re still finding your feet in surfing, you may want to start with something more stable and forgiving. Boards like the Harley Ingleby Moe or the Skindog Ova are great options for beginner to low-intermediate surfers.

But if you’ve got your fundamentals dialed in and you’re looking for something with more performance, speed, and responsiveness, the Mid 6 Twin is a fantastic choice.

Best Wave Conditions for the Mid6 Twin

This board shines in bigger, punchier conditions. While it can handle smaller, mushier waves (especially with the 6’10 model’s paddle power), it really lights up when there’s some size and shape to the surf.

Think:

  • Punchy beach breaks

  • Lively point breaks

  • Fast reef setups

If you’re regularly surfing more mellow or fat waves, there are other mid-length twins that might perform better in those conditions. But for versatility and performance, especially in good waves, the Mid 6 Twin is heaps of fun.

Board Breakdown & Dimensions

The Mid6 Twin currently comes in two sizes:

  • 6’4″ – for a more shortboard-style feel

  • 6’10” – for that true mid-length experience (this is the one I tested)

Key features:

  • Pulled-in nose and round tail for high-performance turning

  • Six-channel bottom for speed, grip, and drive

  • High-performance rails, especially in the back third, for added control and responsiveness

The channels are a standout design element — they provide extra hold, especially when pushing turns hard, and help maintain speed through sections. I definitely noticed this heaps when surfing on my backhand, where I tend to struggle on a lot of twin fin boards, especially those with more upright style fins.

Fin Setup

This board is a dedicated twin fin, and it’s made to be paired with the FCS Power Twin set — designed by Harley Ingleby himself. It’s ones of FCS’s best selling  twin fin setups and works seamlessly with the Mid 6 Twin’s shape and channels.

Expect:

  • Fast, playful flow

  • Solid hold through turns (thanks to the channels and upright fin profile)

  • Confidence and control, even on your backhand

Thunderbolt Construction Options

The Mid6 Twin is available in:

  • Thunderbolt Red – More durable, great for everyday surfers

  • Thunderbolt Black – Lighter and more high-performance, ideal for those really pushing the limits

I surfed the Thunderbolt Red, and it felt solid and responsive underfoot. Unless you’re chasing elite-level performance, the Red construction is probably your best bet for everyday use.

What’s It Like to Surf?

In a word: magic.

I wasn’t planning to add this board to my quiver, but after taking it to the Maldives, I was instantly hooked. My first wave at Pasta Point had one of the best turns I’ve done in a long time — and I barely touched anything else the whole trip afterwards!

Highlights:

  • Fast and flowy with excellent glide

  • Rail-to-rail transitions are smooth and precise

  • Great speed and hold through turns, even when pushed

  • Backhand-friendly, thanks to the extra grip from the channels

Whether in waist-high runners or overhead punchy reef breaks, the Mid 6 Twin performed exceptionally. It never felt too loose, even with the upright Power Twins — just the right blend of fun and control, which for me is a winning combo anyday!

Final Verdict

The Thunderbolt Harley Ingleby Mid6 Twin is a fast, flowy, and high-performance mid-length twin fin that delivers everything you want — and a little more. It’s become a go-to board in my quiver for those days when I want to throw something around or take on bigger, punchier surf.

If you’re an intermediate to advanced surfer looking for a mid-length with twin-fin flair, this is one to seriously consider.
